Legal Counsel
About Lightyear
We’re on a mission to make investing better for everyone in Europe. More specifically, we’re making it light years better (sorry… we had to!). We’re combining multi-currency accounts with unlimited access to global markets so that everyone in Europe can invest without sneaky hidden fees or unnecessary barriers.
In just four years, we’ve gone from idea to fully regulated in both the UK and EU, launched across 25 countries, raised $58M, and built a 70+ strong team from Europe’s top fintechs and startups.
We’re backed by a stellar line-up of investors – including Lightspeed Venture Partners, Sir Richard Branson, Mosaic Ventures, NordicNinja, and some of Europe’s top founders like Taavet Hinrikus (Wise), Jaan Tallinn (Skype), and Markus Villig (Bolt).
What you will do
As a Legal Counsel, you will help the company launch in new markets, with new products and to new kinds of customers, all the while ensuring our conduct is sustainable long term.
You will be working with different parts of the organisation (operations, product, engineering teams) to evaluate different legal risks and design efficient controls to mitigate these.
Your responsibilities include:
- Give accurate and timely counsel to the organisation in a variety of legal topics (partnerships, marketing, product features etc.);
- Research and evaluate different regulatory requirements regarding business and product decisions and operations, and offer proactive advice on possible legal solutions;
- Communicate and negotiate with external parties (regulators, external counsel, partners), draft and solidify agreements and other legal documents;
- Deal with complex legal matters with multiple stakeholders and provide clarification on legal language or specifications to everyone in the organisation;
- Conduct regulatory horizon scanning and impact assessments;
- Raise awareness and knowledge of regulatory topics in the organisation.
Requirements
- Exceptional written and spoken English. You’ll be chatting with our partners and, of course, the rest of the team on a daily basis.
- 3-5 years of experience working in legal or compliance areas in financial services, experience as an in-house legal counsel or a lawyer in an attorney's office.
- Experience and understanding of financial services (especially investment services) law, consumer protection, marketing and/or data protection.
- Very good collaboration and consulting skills, ability to dive deep into various topics, extract insights, create structures and build consensus.
- Having worked in a startup environment is a plus; having worked with operations and product engineering teams to build things is a plus.
- An understanding of the investment world is great, but it’s not required. A willingness to learn about it is a must, though!
